Public Cultural District? Republic of Cultural District.

Jaffa Lam specialized in sculpture installation developed from site-specific historical and cultural event. "What art/artist could do for the society" is the question she investigates in many other projects recent years.

After realized the background of Hamburg's HafenCity, Lam connected Hong Kong and Hamburg by similar city cultural planning issue in both cities. There is a huge cultural district (West Kowloon Cultural District) is going to be planned again after several times of turning down. Jaffa fold a huge airplane by a piece of huge sewn paper made by Hong Kong Cultural event leaflet. She also turn the previous Hong Kong Government Questionnaire on the West Kowloon issue into “Questionnair on the Republic Of Cultural District ". During the exhibition, Hamburg audience helped to answer by folding the answer sheet into an airplane and flied back to the container.

On the top of the container, there was a recycled umbrella parachute which designed by Jaffa, and sewn by a group of unemployed housewives who lost their job during the Hong Kong urban development. They were sewers in garment factory which move to main land China due to the cheaper production cost.

Through the cultural/art event, it provide a model of micro economic system which support minority in our blooming property market oriented society.
